Railroad shipping: AAR says weekly volumes down 8.3 percent

Freight traffic volumes on United States railroads for the week ending January 26 were down compared to the same timeframe last year, according to data released today by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

BTS says U.S. surface trade with Mexico and Canada up 8.6 percent

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was up 8.6 percent in November 2007 compared to November 2006, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Port of Los Angeles still tops in North America

Despite a series of controversial new fees and tariffs imposed on shippers last year, the Port of Los Angeles continues to lead the nation. The port handled 8.4 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), a 1.36 percent dip in total TEU volume but a 3.2 percent increase in loaded TEUs volume over the 2006 calendar year.

UPS’ quarterly results a mixed bag

While overall earnings were up on an annual basis for its U.S. package, International Package, and Supply Chain and Freight Units, UPS has a net loss of $2.58 billion during the fourth quarter of 2007.

New approach for sustainable supply chains needed, cites ARC report

Changes in one area of the supply chain often impact another area, says report author Adrian Gonzalez who bids shippers to consider the tradeoffs when implementing green initiatives.  He suggests shippers should take a fresh look at how their supply chain and business models revolve around ‘green’. To improve sustainability, a revolutionary effort may be warranted to create a supply chain with an economically intelligent design.

House T&I Committee holds TWIC hearing

RDFS announces Northeast service expansion
